Learning event for the farming community in Batticoloa

Oxfam in Sri Lanka conducted a learning event on 29th of August in Batticaloa with the participation 125 provincial agriculture officials. Among the participants was the Provincial Director Agriculture Department (Eastern Province), Deputy Provincial Director Agricultural Department (Eastern Province), Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department (Batticoloa, Ampara and Trincomalee) and the Agriculture Instructor (Batticoloa, Ampara and Trincomalee)

The discussion included sharing findings from Oxfam's "Rapid Care Assessments" and initiatives in the agriculture sector, particularly with regard to the ICT Water Management Sytems and Weather Index Insurance Scheme (in partnership with Leecom and Sanasa Insurance). The knowledge-sharing sessions provided an informative insight to the workd Oxfam in Sri Lanka is currently carrying out and hoping to further introduce to farming communities.

    Active participation and dialogue among the participants, particularly in relation to unpaid carework. 

  • The introduction of Water Management Sytems and Weather Index Insurance Schemes will help the farming community be better prepared for unprecedented weather conditions that can be harmful crops, while also helping farmers to bounce-back in the aftermath of floods, storms and drought.
